Atalanta B.C., a small club from a working-class city in Italy has always been a modest club. Merely a decade ago, they were playing in Serie B. Who would have thought they would qualify for the Champions League Round of 16 in consecutive seasons in the foreseeable future? The Teamwork of the La Dea’s with the Manager Gian Piero Gasperini and captain Alejandro Gomez at the helm was appealing to the whole football world.
Alejandro Gomez, the 32-year-old Midfielder, played a pivotal role in the emergence of Atalanta. He is arguably Atalanta’s greatest ever player. He has more assists (58), created more chances (514) than anyone else in Atalanta, and is ranked 5th across Europes top 5 leagues for chances created since he joined them.
But recently the people of Bergamo were hit by tragedy after tragedy as Bergamo was hit the hardest by Covid in Italy. It was a surprise as reports broke out about the Gomez-Gasperini bust-up for the footballing world as Atalanta looked like a tight-knit squad from the outside.
During a 1-1 draw with FC Midtjylland, less than a week after starring in Merseyside, Gomez was subbed at half time. The substitution was forced because Gomez refused Gasperini’s request to play on the right flank and remained central. According to the reports, there was a confrontation between the two during half time, with some papers reporting that it even got physical. Even though Gasperini remained silent initially, Gomez was omitted from the squad for the next match against Udinese.
It was thought that the problems were concealed internally as Gomez played the full 90 minutes in the win against Ajax. The No. 10 was left on the bench for a whole game against Fiorentina. Gomez took it to Instagram and said “I just want to tell you that, When I leave, you will know the truth about everything. You know me well; You know who I am. I love you, your captain”.
To everyone’s surprise, Gomez was included in the squad against Juventus but was only used as a second-half substitute and caused controversy when he was caught by the camera appearing to sing Juventus’ anthem.
Later Atalanta’s President Antonio Percassi spoke to Eco di Bergamo and said “The Papu case? No, look, we have already talked enough, the subject is closed – end of.” And praised the manager
“Gasperini for life. And not just him, even the whole structure. This organization thanks to the great work of my son Luca as well, is giving us great results.”
Their relationship was only getting worse as Papu Gomez responded to Gasperini’s comments that he is not adapting to the changes, by posting stories where he highlighted some of the occasions where he tracked back to help the team recover possession of the ball.
As of now, the thing that Gomez is up for sale is the only clear thing. He was linked with both the Milan clubs but recent reports from Italy stated that he will not be sold to a fellow Italian club and that they won’t sell him for free.
