According to reports, Southampton are interested in bringing Leicester City’s Demarai Gray on a free transfer in the summer. The 24-year-old winger who barely featured for Brendan Rodger’s side this season will be out of contract in June 2021 and is allowed to speak to foreign clubs in January regarding a pre-contract agreement. The Saints face stiff competition from European clubs Benfica, Marseille and Monaco who are also hoping to open talks with the former Birmingham man.
Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers had already made it clear that the youngster could leave Leicester come the end of the 2020-21 season.
Rodgers said: “It’s pretty clear with Demarai that he’s looking to move on. His attitude to training has been first class, he has been very professional.
“He is at the stage of his career where he has been here a long time and hasn’t maybe nailed down a place. A fresh start may be the course for him.
“I will always respect him and until his last day I will never discard him but it’s looking more than likely he will probably be somewhere else next season.”
For Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton, signing Gray could help them fill the ‘homegrown’ quota in their squad which is very important for English Premier League sides following the new rule enforced after Brexit. Top-flight clubs are supposed to have a limit on signing overseas talents and must have a specific number of homegrown players in the squad. Gray could be the right signing for the Saints as he could easily fit into the criteria as well as Hasenhuttl’s free-flowing and dynamic style of play.
Demarai Gray who joined Leicester from Birmingham in 2016 for £3.5m was part of the squad which won the Premier League title in the 2015-16 season. He made just 2 appearances for the Foxes this season across all competitions failing to register a goal or assist. It is rumoured that Gray would love a move to a club abroad but if Southampton comes calling then he could have a change of mind.
