January transfer window may not be a period where high profile transfers take place, but it has always been the opportunity for clubs to rectify their mistakes from the summer window and to bolster the squad. Due to the financial constraints caused by Covid-19, most of the clubs are not in a position to spend money on signings. But the clock is ticking for those clubs who are desperately searching for some reinforcements.
The window closes at 3:30 AM IST for EPL clubs, 3:29 AM for Spanish sides, 11:30 PM for Serie A, and 9:30 PM for Ligue 1 teams. The window will remain open till February 26th midnight for Chinese clubs. Despite the deadline, the clubs will be given additional time to complete the ‘deal-sheet’ paperwork. Post-Brexit, since the labor policies and documentation procedures have become complicated for the English clubs, this relaxation time to complete their paperwork would be a great relief for them.
This window hasn’t witnessed any big-money transfer yet. Arsenal has made some ripples by adding Martin Odegaard on loan from Real Madrid and Mat Ryan from Brighton. They have also managed to offload Sokratis and Mesut Ozil, while William Saliba has been loaned-out.
Here are some possible transfers, that could happen on the deadline day:
1. Ben Davies:
Liverpool squad is devastated by long-term injuries suffered by many of their key players. With three of their senior centre-backs out injured, Jurgen Klopp is desperate to add a defender to his team. Multiple sources claim that the fee and personal terms have been agreed to buy the Preston North end player. Although the 25-year-old English star has signed a pre-contract agreement with Scottish giants Celtic, it seems that this won’t be a hindrance in completing a dream move to the reigning EPL champions.
2. Gedson Fernandes
The Portuguese youngster is currently playing for Tottenham, on loan from Benfica. But Benfica seems unhappy about the playing time that Jose Mourinho is giving to their prospect. Fernandes has made just 14 appearances over the last calendar year. Reports suggest that Benfica are in talks with Turkish club Galatasaray over a loan deal. They believe that this could provide more first-team opportunities for the 22-year-old.
3. Patrick Van Aanholt
Mikel Arteta has been busy this January adding and deleting names from his squad list. Latest rumors link Crystal Palace’s Left-back Patrick Van Aanholt to the Gunners. Arteta is looking for a backup for Kieran Tierney, who can provide some real competition for the Scotland International. Arsenal could also allow Ainsley Maitland-Niles to leave on a loan deal.
4. Dele Alli
Dele Alli has reached the end of the road at Tottenham Hotspur. The player is desperate to leave the club as Jose Mourinho has no intention to use him as a first-choice midfielder. Although, what prevents Alli from leaving could be Giovani Lo Celso’s injury which has left Spurs short of midfielders. PSG is the rumoured destination for the English star, as Pochettino is interested in re-uniting with his former player.
5. Billy Gilmour
Winds of change have begun to blow in Chelsea under the reign of Thomas Tuchel. Despite having a fairy tale debut, Billy Gilmour couldn’t earn consistent playing time in the star-studded Chelsea line up. Daily Mail reports that the teenager could sign a loan deal and join Southampton FC on deadline day.
