Manchester United women continued their good run in the Barclays Women’s Super League as their manager and star striker were honoured for their performance during December. United forward Leah Galton was awarded the Barclays Women’s Super League player of the month alongside her boss Casey Stoney who won the Manager of the month award for the second time in a row this season. Stoney was adjudged the WSL manager of the month for November as well.
Leah Galton overcame the likes of Jess Fishlock, Caitlin Foord, Sam Kerr and Caroline Weir to win the accolade meanwhile Stoney faced stiff competition from Chelsea boss Emma Hayes, Spurs boss Rehanne Skinner and Manchester City’s Gareth Taylor. The Barclays FA Women’s Super League monthly awards are presented based on the decision made by an FA panel as well as a public vote.
The Man United manager had an amazing run of results in December as her side started the month with away wins against Aston Villa and Reading. They ended the month on a high with a 6-1 demolition of Bristol City before the Christmas break.
Galton, who followed the footsteps of her teammate Tobin Heath, in winning the player of the month award scored in all the three games her team played in December. The 26-year-old scored a brace against Bristol City and netted crucial goals against both Villa and Reading. The forward joined United in the summer of 2018 and was very instrumental in helping them gain promotion from the Championship to the WSL.
Manchester United are currently the table-toppers similar to the men’s side thanks to a 14-match unbeaten run in the league. They will be facing title rivals and defending champions Chelsea in the league on Sunday where they have the chance to go 6 points clear on the top if they win all three points.
