Manchester United stars Axel Tuanzebe and Anthony Martial were subjected to racial abuse after the Red Devils lost to Sheffield United with the former even forced to delete his Instagram account.
Anthony Martial and Tuanzebe started the match with the latter making his first Premier League start of the season. The young center-back was a surprise inclusion in the starting lineup and was picked because of an injury to Eric Bailly.
Tuanzebe looked out of sorts from the start of the game itself and was unfortunately involved in the Sheffield United winner as 2nd half substitute Oliver Burke’s shot deflected off his leg, into the goal. However, following the defeat, the young defender has received several vile racist comments on his Instagram account.
Several Manchester United players and club legends have condemned this vile behaviour . The Official Manchester United Twitter account has also released a statement condemning the disgraceful act while also sending a message to the social media apps to monitor and minimize these kinds of occurrences in the future.
The statement read “Everyone at Manchester United is disgusted by the racial abuse received by players via social media after last night’s game. We utterly condemn it and it is encouraging to see other fans condemn this on social media also.”
“We urge social media platforms and regulatory authorities to strengthen measures to prevent this kind of behavior.”
“Manchester United has zero-tolerance of any form of racism or discrimination and a long-standing commitment to campaigning against it through our All Red All Equal initiative. Identifying these anonymous mindless idiots remains problematic.”
The incident proves that bending the knee before kick-off and displaying banners that read ” No room for racism” just can’t uproot this regressive construct from society. Several Anti-racist organizations such as Kick it Out have also spoken against this shameful deed and have offered their support to Tuanzebe. Tuanzebe has reportedly re-joined Instagram. The Manchester United academy graduate has so far made 15 appearances for the senior team, and also worn the captain’s armband once.
